Will my Home & Contents Insurance Policy cover the removal insurance?

Contact your insurer to find out if this is the case. Many people think their home contents insurance covers transit of their goods when they move house. If it is, it is also important to find out exactly what is covered. An authorised AFRA member can offer a full range of cover from Restricted to Full Cover if you are not satisfied with the level of cover offered by your home contents policy.

Does my Home & Contents Insurance cover my goods while in store?

Contact your insurance company and find out exactly what your cover is for. Make sure they are aware that your goods will be stored in a bulk storage facility with no access to the public. This may affect the level of cover offered. An authorised AFRA member can can offer either Restricted or Full cover of your goods while in store. To take advantage of Full cover, the goods also need to be insured for Full Cover transit insurance when coming into store and going out of store.

What is Removal Transit Insurance?Removal Transit Insurance

Well, removal transit insurance means your goods are insured while they are being transported. This means it only covers your goods while they are in a vessel (like a truck, ship, and aircraft) for fire, flood, overturning, lightning, collisions and accidents. A lot of people think if another vehicle runs into the truck won’t they have insurance like 3rd party property. Yes, but if the driver of the other vehicle in under the influence of drugs or alcohol, even if they have insurance the insurance company will wipe them as this is outside of their policy conditions.

Sometimes there is the case where the driver has no insurance, registration or no driver’s licence, so they have no cover. Transit insurance will not only cover for these types of situations, it also covers you if there is no-one to blame.

I have a story that happened a few years ago of a removalist company that was driving a truck load of furniture to Melbourne. On the way, the driver stopped at a rest area for a break. That particular day it was quite windy. As the driver was in the bathroom, a huge gum tree fell over onto the middle of the truck pan and crushed it. The removal company have comprehensive insurance to cover their truck, so they were fine, however the goods are not covered, and you can’t take a tree to court. The customers in this story did not have transit insurance to cover their goods. The customers still had to pay the removalist as they had done nothing wrong, plus they had to pay for another truck to come out and salvage what they could. And as they were salvaging the goods it started to rain, so whatever wasn’t damaged got wet.

This is an amazingly unlucky story, but you never know what can happen. Transit insurance seems cheap when you consider what can happen.

This question is asked a lot.Home & Contents Insurance Policy

The name of this type of insurance policy is called ‘Transit Insurance’ or ‘Restricted Cover’. It covers your goods while they are in the truck only. Outside of the truck to the house is called ‘All Risk’. All Risk is a more extensive and totally different cover which includes transit insurance cover, which I will explain in another post.

Many people think their home contents insurance covers insurance of their goods when they’re moving however this is not always the case. From my research, I have only found one company that provides transit insurance only. It is important to find out exactly what is covered, so check your policy wording and contact your insurance company. It’s a good idea to contact your insurance company anyway as your living conditions and belonging will change, so will your policy. For example, different areas are considered more or less risk depending on the terrain, house values are different and your amount of furniture may change, more items or less items.

Most polices can be transferred to your new house, but if there is a delay from when you move out till when you move in the insurance company may make you cancel your policy and start a new one.

Junking Big Electronics and Appliances

Today, people continue to think progressively when it comes to the health of the environment, especially in the context of Junking Big Electronics and Appliances. Although it might save you time in the long run, tossing old, large electronics and appliances directly into the nearest dumpster can substantially fuel ecological decline. As an individual, this action may seem insignificant compared to the grand scheme of things, but it’s the individual contributions that comprise the aggregate detrimental effect. Here are some quick and “less” dirty ways to go about eliminating old equipment.

Resale

Before you decide to throw away an item, consider its value. Maybe you’re the type of person who takes great care of your belongings, and maybe you recently got a pay rise at your job, and now you want to purchase a new flat screen television or a new set of stainless steel kitchen appliances. If the old gear functions properly, why not try to sell it? For local buyers, make a simple Gumtree ad or look into Lawson’s Auctions or even host your own garage sale. For national / distant buyers, head to eBay – just make sure the buyer handles shipping costs!

 Reuse

In general, donating reusable belongings is a win-win for all parties involved. The recipient(s) benefit because they receive something functional and at no cost, whereas the donor benefits from the knowledge of knowing they helped someone. Plus, if the organisation qualifies as a deductible gift recipient, the donor could be eligible for a tax deduction. However, the donation must be a true gift and must meet certain value standards. A word to the wise: in instances where furniture, appliances and electronics are too big to move, worn out or otherwise difficult to repurpose, consider looking into a backup plan.

 Remove

Most local waste disposal companies will allow you to drop off old appliances, however, you’ll likely be responsible for transportation. On the other hand, rubbish removal services can be hired to come to your place of residence and pick up unwanted items. These options are ideal for irreparable belongings. If it is electronics that require disposal, call up local electronic stores, as some operate electronic and computer recycling programs. In some cases, they’ll even pick up the electronics for free or at a low cost.

Furthermore, the Fridge Buyback Program is a good option for those looking to purchase a new, more efficient refrigerator. The program includes a free collection service and taken in more than 49,103 fridges!

If the removalist has taken all care and something does happen that is outside of the removalist control and the goods do not arrive as it left the previous address, then unless you can prove negligence, you have no claim.

Also, if the vehicle is involved in an accident and the other party is not insured, and the accident is their fault – then you again have no claim.

free insurance articleThe free insurance that some removalist companies offer is their insurance that they may have for themselves. This is only transit insurance and is not for the customer directly, and if a claim is made the money goes to the removalist and they decide how much the claimant is paid.

In other words the insurance policy/certificate is in the name of the removal company and belongs to them not the client.
However AFRA removalists are able to provide removal and storage insurance that will cover your goods and provide a policy/certificate in your name.
So if you are offered ‘free’ insurance by a removal company, you owe it to yourself to ensure:
  • The company is registered with ASIC as a licensee or as an authorised representative to provide insurance
  • The person discussing insurance must have a valid authorisation stating he or she is a licensee or authorised representative.
  • The policy identifies you, the customer, as the insured party
  • You receive a certificate of insurance validating your insurance with your name and the name of the insurance company on it along with their contact details.

The removalist cover is only for the external of items that is within their control. There are many circumstances for which a removalist is not liable to make good for any loss or damage to your goods. This is particularly the case when all care is taken, but damage occurs regardless of the best packing and handling methods.
There are also many things beyond the removalists’ control for which they are not liable – such as the internals of packed boxes. Basically, boxes not packed by the removalist (usually known as PBO cartons – Packed By Owner).
Secondly the internal of all the electrical items (for the moves to check every electrical item on every setting would be very time-consuming plus the item may not have been working before the removalist moved it) this would make for a lot of claims for items that never worked.
The third main risk is other road users, if an accident was caused by a 3rd party due to their negligence this would be deemed to be out of the removalist control.
There are other likely circumstances, for example floods, fire and the structural integrity of the items or property the removers are at, such as stairs collapsing.
That’s why it’s always beneficial to investigate any home and contents insurance policy you may have and ask your movers questions about insurance that will cover any gaps in your policy.

You may think to use odd boxes or open boxes from the fruit market may save you money however this is not true as it takes the movers longer to pack a truck as fruit boxes are odd shapes, they don’t stack very well, fit evenly, they can crush and fall apart. Removalist boxes are made to a certain size that fits across the truck perfectly, saving space and time. Also, they are double corrugated for extra strength.  Another reason is, if boxes are too small let’s say like a shoe boxes this will take longer as the movers could only possibly carry 5 or more of these at a time as appose to one large box that could fit 10 to 15 shoe boxes in it. The larger boxes move quicker and reduce the risk of any damage.
Fruit boxes can be a safety issue, one example is a removalist went to place a light open-top fruit box into the truck just above his shoulder height. As the removalist was placing the box a knitting needle shot out from the top of the open box hitting the removalist in the face on his cheek just below his eye. The removalist could not react in time, as his both hands were holding the box at the time. In this story, he was not injured, but it could have been very different. Always use sealed boxes or if the box can’t be sealed place packaging paper over the top of the box and tape it down, so nothing can come out.

This is a question often asked and there are a few simple methods.
Firstly try to choose a company that is in the area or in the area you are moving to, this will reduce the travelling time and reduce the cost.
If you are comfortable with it and like recycling use second hand removalist boxes and ask if they will buy them back after you have finished with them without any time limits on the return.
You can save a lot of money by inspecting all your furniture and making sure you are not moving furniture you are only going to throw out when you get to your new home or it doesn’t suit the new home. This is a good tip if you are moving interstate because your move will be on space not time.
Dissembling and reassembling – beds, washing machines or any other furniture can save time and space if you are going into storage.

You can use thick strong garbage bags, to put donnas, cushions, pillows and soft toys in them. This will save buying a box, it will keep them clean and the movers can easily carry four at a time- as long as they are tuff bags and later you can reuse them as a garbage bag. Keep them next to the bed so in the morning on moving day just get out of bed shove your bedding into a few bags and your done!

Website Offers Advice & Tips for Frazzled Movers

Moving house can be one of life’s most stressful experiences – research has shown the stress levels are up there with a death of a family member, marriage breakdown or loss of a job.
Peak industry body the Australian Furniture Remover’s Association (AFRA) has this week launched a website to assist in taking the stress out of moving.
“Moving can actually be a really emotional experience, and we identified that many people were experiencing anxiety and stress when moving house,” says Executive Director of AFRA, Viv Hanley.
“A home contains memories, and there is a lot of hassle involved in picking up your life and all your possessions when relocating. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories in my 50 years in the industry – damaged property and hidden charges are among the most common.”
Mr Hanley’s advice to avoid the potential pitfalls of moving is to use an accredited removalist.
“A lot of people will just book the first mover they find in the phone book, but it’s important to do your research,” Mr Hanley says.
“Unlike non-regulated removalists, AFRA accredited members undergo training, are required to carry insurance and all vehicles are kept up to industry standards. If you have an issue with an accredited removal company, AFRA also offers a dispute resolution procedure.”
AFRA has launched a revamped version of its website www.afra.com.au for members of the public to search for an accredited removalist, as well as find advice and tips to assist in planning a hassle-free move.
AFRA suggests the following simple steps to take the stress out of moving house
Choose an AFRA accredited removal company — this means the company has conducted a registered training course and must adhere to an industry Code of Conduct – don’t use a moving company unless at least one of the removalists is accredited
Take out insurance — It is unlikely your belongings will be covered by home and contents insurance when you are moving, as the risk of damage is greater when goods are being relocated. Transit insurance, offered by accredited removalists, is in most instances the most economical way to cover your goods in transit.
Know what you’re paying for – double check that the quote you are provided with by the moving company includes the travel cost to and from the properties – especially for long distance moves.
Make an inventory of your belongings — if you are asking for a quote over the phone, take a thorough inventory of your belongings to ensure you are given an accurate quote – or even better, have the removalist visit your home to assess its contents before they prepare their quote.
It is not usual practice for a removalist to provide an inventory unless you are moving interstate. If you are moving interstate or into storage, you should make sure the removalist completes an inventory that is signed by both parties at pickup and at delivery.
What if your goods are damaged? — If you are insured, the insurance will cover any damage. If you are not insured, you may have no recourse to any compensation. If you believe the removalist was at fault for causing the damage, you should immediately contact the removal company and discuss any issues you may have.
What to do if you have a dispute with your removalist? — If you use an accredited removalist, and you have an issue such as damaged furniture or a dispute over a quote, AFRA offers dispute resolution.
In the event of a problem that cannot be resolved with your removalist company, you can approach AFRA for assistance in resolving the claim. If this is not successful, an independent disputes tribunal will adjudicate. The AFRA member has agreed to abide by its decision as part of the Code of Conduct.
If your removalist is not accredited with AFRA, you will need to contact Fair Trading over any disputes.
According to Mr Hanley, accredited members of AFRA range in size from small one truck owner operated companies to large multinational companies, covering virtually every region in Australia.
To search for an accredited removalist, or to find further tips and advice on moving house, visit www.afra.com.au
